DC was invaded on Saturday night!! French sensation Joachim Garraud came through Washington with his Space Invaders themed video DJ set and his keytar. The plan was to smash Glow to little bits. And smash he did.

There’s a handful of DJs that bring keyboards with them to their gigs, but we can’t think of any that play ‘em like an axe. It was as if Jimi Hendrix had been reborn as a DJ. With thumping house bangers as a mere backdrop, the ‘F*** Me I’m Famous’ co-founder jammed out to Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water, Coldplay – Clocks and Swedish House Mafia – One, amongst others. It’s always a thing of beauty; the face of a musician playing his/her instrument. You could truly feel the music merely by observing Joachim’s face. It was truly an awe-inspiring expression.

Garraud made amazing use of Fur’s projectors and HDTV monitors. It’s not easy to describe his visual presentation in words. From the Space Invaders theme to event photos and trippy visuals, including a healthy vegetable diet, the VDJ set is something more DJs should be doing. And if that wasn’t enough, Joachim Garraud the photographer had his SLR out and was covering his own event, while playing it!

After about the first hour Joachim settled in from his opening sequence and really banged out with tracks like Cirez D – On Off, System F – Out of the Blue 2010 (Koen Groeneveld Remix), Darude – Sandstorm, Sidney Sampson -Riverside, Mstrkrft f. John Legend – Heartbreaker (Laidback Luke Remix), and an absurd mix of House of Pain – Jump Around into Daft Punk – Aerodynamic. And as if the Space Invaders weren’t enough, he busted out the Tetris theme. The only other DJ that we can remember doing that is Yoji.

All in all, Joachim Garraud has mastered the formula for throwing an amazing party. Video set, check. Live instrument, check. Bang out house music, check. Knowing the difference between taking fun seriously and seriously having fun, triple check!
