EDM Scores 14 Nominations At This Year’s VMA Awards

It’s that time of year again, for our favorite artists in all genres to compete for the legendary Moonman at the MTV VMA’s! For this year’s awards show, EDM will have a stronger presence than ever.

Two years ago, MTV established a brand-new category at their flagship awards show, the ever-so-popular Video Music Awards. The category? Best Electronic Dance Music Video. (Pretty cool, huh?) The move received much praise from the dance music scene, bringing our beloved genre into the limelight. Unfortunately a year later in 2013, dance music fans were disappointed to see all five nominees leave without an award. Enough about the past though, the future is looking very promising for our DJ’s, and for good reason.

2 VMA nominations for Zedd, 1 for Calvin, 2 for Avicii…and none for Chuckie. (At least not yet..)

This year, EDM has more dance nominees than ever before, so there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing our favorite artist’s receive the recognition they deserve. Not only does dance music have it’s own presence in the form of the MTV Clubland honor, but a few of our favorite DJ’s have been able to make their ways into other categories, such as Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” for Best Pop Video,  and David Guetta’s “One Voice” for Best Video With A Social Message. (Very, very cool.) It’s also worth noting that a couple former EDM-collaborators that have lent their voices to create some of our most-loved anthems, have now been nominated for a few of the major award categories. Sia, who did vocals for D. Guetta’s “Titanium”, won herself two nods for “Chandelier“, one for Video of the Year, the other for Best Choreography, respectively. Sam Smith, the British falsetto crooner who sang on the smash-hit “Latch” by Disclosure, got himself nods for both Best Male Video, and Artist to Watch.

Sorry…DJ Snake can’t hear you over his 4 VMA nominations.

One particular DJ, who’s leading the pack this year is Parisian red carpet newcomer, DJ Snake, who is in prime position for multiple Moonmen this year. His mega-hit collaboration with Lil’ Jon, “Turn Down For What“, is tied with Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” for most nominations (4) this year, which is very impressive for our very-own Moonrise Festival performer. With four nods and several new singles set to be released this summer, it’s looking pretty clear that Snake will not be turning down for anything anytime soon.

A Disclosure x One Direction collab would definitely sweep the VMA's.

Additional EDM artists on the ballot for 2014 are the two British brothers that operate under the stage name of Disclosure, and wonder-kid Martin Garrix, all who received MTV Clubland Award nominations. One artist who will be representing the deeper side of dance music is French techno DJ Gesaffelstein, who won himself a Best Cinematography nomination for his work on “Hate Or Glory“.
