GlowU features rising DJ/producers from the DC area universities. Allow us to introduce you to Max Rewak (Bethlehem, PA.) He’s a rising senior at George Washington University and has been building a strong following in and around Washington, DC with his hard hitting DJ style recently supporting big names such as Arty and more. We sat down with Max to get to know him a little better. (Upcoming gig at Glow supporting Sandro Silva!)
Q: What was your most memorable EDM experience?
Max: My favorite EDM experience was probably seeing Aphex Twin at Space Ibiza this summer. He was playing the We Love closing party with Fatboy Slim, 2manydjs, Joris Voorn and James Zabiela among other killer DJs. He’s got an insane, trippy visual display and the most ridiculous experimental drum n’ bass I’ve ever heard. Truly an incredible night.
Q: Are you producing your own music?
Max: Yes indeed; I’ve worked with my friend MgM (from Bethlehem) and more recently I’ve done some tunes with my friends Elucia Khruschev, Spectre7p and GLock in DC. At this point I’m still in a learning phase, but things are sounding better and better. I’ve made it a personal goal to release an original track by the time I graduate.
Q: Who/what are your musical influences?
Max: Some of my biggest influences include moombahtonistas like Dave Nada, Sabo, and Munchi; I love high energy 140bpm tunes like Dismantle is putting out, and I’m really liking some of the more midtempo, glitch hoppy tracks that producers like Om Unit are releasing. My roots are really in house music – I range from anything from hard electro house tracks like Boys Noize and NT89, to tech and minimal house like Joris Voorn and Pleasurekraft, to soulful and deep house – I really love Booka Shade – and anyone on the Night Slugs label.
Q: Who is your favorite artist at the moment?
Max: Actually this would have to be my biggest influence as well – a hometown hero from Allentown, PA, Seclusiasis label co-owner, and grime/dubstep producer extraordinaire by the name of Starkey. If I could only listen to one track for the rest of my life, it’d be “Pleasure Points” from his excellent 2010 full-length Eardrums and Blackholes. He runs the gamut from laid-back beats and beautiful melodies to full-on skank out rage fest tunes. Simply incredible – really hoping he comes around to DC soon.
Q: Any cool upcoming gigs?
Max: I’m really looking forward to my Glow debut at Josephine on Friday, April 20 supporting Sandro Silva as well as the Dub101 “Final Exam” at District on the 19th. I’m also really stoked to fly out to Pittsburgh the first weekend in June to play back to back with my boy MgM at the Lawrenceville Moose Lodge for the ‘Get Rowdy’ event. (That’ll be a proper rave, and we’re both really excited for that.)
Q: What is your dream gig as a DJ?
Max: What a difficult question! It’s really hard for me to pick one place that I’d really love to play, but in DC I’d love to play on the Glow stage at Fur or to do a set at U Street Music Hall. Worldwide, I think it’d be a life changing experience to play in Ibiza – especially at somewhere like Privilege, Space, or Amnesia where the EDM culture is legendary.
