After the release of their Freak On You E.P. (Magik Muzik) and single, “Silver Splits The Blue” w/ Jeziel Quintela feat. Christian Burns, Manufactured Star Shawn Sabo sat down with us to talk music.
Having just spun Josephine in late February, the duo – Brad Roulier and Shawn Sabo – are literally non-stop when it comes to gigging. It’s a challenge to find quiet time uninterrupted in the studio, but even still, the guys have managed to produce a string of hit singles and remixes for the likes of Pitbull and Chris Brown.
G:
You have a hot new single out w/ Jeziel Quintela ft Christian Burns, “Silver Splits The Blue.” What was the idea behind the making of this track?
Sabo:
The concept was to make a fun party song and to keep it sexy. We started with the beat and for a month or two before, come up with the idea. We sent the song to Christian [Burns]. We’re big fans of Christian’s work from what he’s done w/ Tiësto’s alias, Allure.
We got in touch and we had an instant connection. We had an amazing time together in Vegas where we shot the music video, and we really bonded. We had a good night! Jeziel [Quintela] is a good friend of ours from Denver. He works with a lot of our songs doing remixes, so he was a natural fit.
G:
You seem to be releasing music really rapidly, and it’s all good! Why did you release “Silver Splits The Blue” as a standalone track and not part of the Freak On You E.P. from Magik Muzik? Was there a reason not to include it on the E.P.?
Sabo:
No reason. We just think “Silver Splits The Blue” is a great tune that would stand on its own and hopefully become an instant classic or more of a radio hit like we had with “Take Me Over” featuring Scarlett Quinn. Paul Oakenfold did a remix for us of “Silver Splits The Blue” and it’s just amazing!
G:
Drawing on your name, what are the necessary parts needed to “manufacture” a superstar?
Sabo:
Good music, a good marketing plan and an amazing live show.
G:
You are also doing some pretty big-name remixes! Talk about some of the most impressive mainstream acts you’ve recently remixed or are soon to release?
Sabo:
We just finished a remix for a Pitbull featuring Chris Brown single. They’re both super-talented guys. The track is “International Love.”
G:
How do you see the Washington DC club scene as it relates within the U.S. scene?
Sabo:
The Glow promoters are one of the best in the North American EDM scene. It was great to play for them a second time and we’re really excited to come back again soon!
