“Have you heard of this guy Skrillex?”
Jon Deke posed that very question at the Panorama Productions office. As he scoured beatportal.com for the new hotness to drop in his opening and closing sets for Calvin Harris at Lima, the name continued to pop up. In fact, it was the only name that popped up. Beatport’s top 10 songs all belonged to one name… Skrillex.
The next evening some industry friends were buzzing about this guy Skrillex on Mau5trap Recordings. During our interview with Mark Knight before his set at Fur, the name popped up again. That’s when we knew we had to find out everything there is to know about Skrillex. Thank God for Wikipedia!!!
As of 5:36 am on Sunday October 31, Scrillex has the #1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 most downloaded songs on all of Beaport. That is just obscene!! So who exactly is this guy Skrillex who has got the Beatport Top 10 by the balls??
A little progressive, a little dub step, a little electro, some drum and bass, a lot of energy, a ton of bounce and a whole lot of something we’ve never heard before. His name is Skrillex.
The LA native has been commissioned to remix by the likes of Lady Gaga, All American Rejects, Black Eyed Peas, La Roux and many more.
Born Sonny Moore in January of ’88, Skrillex was in a street punk and later a hardcore band (guitar), amassing enough success to record professionally and tour on the Vans Warped Tour. After forming a new band under his name, Moore eventually turned to DJing and producing dance music. In June 2010 he released his first EP as Skrillex entitled ‘My name is Skrillex.’ His second release, a full length album called ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,’ became available on Beatportal on October 22 2010. And the flood gates opened.
His music leaves us speechless. It’s like nothing we have ever heard. The world may not be ready, but nevertheless, Skrillex is here to stay.
